Public involvement is crucial to the success of any transportation project – but it is especially important when the project affects one of Louisville Metro’s busiest and widest traffic corridors.
The New Dixie Highway project is a $35 million investment to improve safety, mobility and livability along a 14-mile stretch of roadway that runs from the Gene Snyder Freeway to downtown Louisville. More than 60,000 drivers and more than 4,000 transit riders travel this busy corridor daily. The project is part of Mayor Greg Fischer’s MOVE Louisville initiative, which seeks to modernize and improve transportation across the metro area.
C2 Strategic Communications works with the New Dixie Highway project team to connect them with people and businesses who may be affected. Recently, we helped coordinate an open house to inform the community about project details including:
- Roadway safety and design improvements
- A new Intelligent Transportation System that will improve and coordinate traffic signal timing
- The region’s first bus rapid transit route
Media in attendance were particularly interested in the overall construction timeline and the potential impact of raised concrete medians in the road’s business stretch. These medians will help to decrease traffic accidents by limiting mid-block left turns. To reach some destinations, people may have to use U-turns.
To help illustrate how these legal U-turns will work, C2 Strategic created a video for the open house and other project communications. The video features real traffic footage from a similar project.
